Winemaker Notes

This is the core red of Foradori: the first and only one to be bottled back in 1960 and still the largest production, from 10 hectares of vines planted from 1956 to 2005 on the flat, sunny, well-drained Camp Rotaliano plateau on sandy, Dolomitic limestone soils. Some of the vines are still pergola-trained, while newer plantings are on wires in the Guyot style; the farming is certified-biodynamic (as for all of their vineyards). The fruit is harvested by hand, destemmed with some whole clusters left intact (varies by vintage) and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and with no sulfur (until racking and bottling). Aging takes place in cement tanks and used foudres of 20-40 hectoliters for about a year.

Blend: 100% Teroldego

There’s a pretty herbal and mentholated freshness that greets the senses as the 2019 Teroldego opens in the glass. Further coaxing brings forward bright strawberry and cherry, along with rosy florals and crushed stone. It’s soft-textured yet potent, with tart red berries and mineral underpinnings propelled by juicy acidity. Finishes fresh and juicy, leaving sweet tannins to linger. There’s no need to wait on this vibrant yet characterful vintage.

Unique to the Trentino region of NE Italy, Teroldego produces a deeply purple-hued wine with an assertive black fruit character and intriguing aromatics. The best quality Teroldego comes from the Campo Rotaliano, a sandy and gravelly plain between the tall mountains of the area. Somm Secret—Dating back to the 15th century in Rotaliano, Teroldego has created a well-connected anthology for itself. As a parent to Lagrein, a variety native to nearby Alto Adige, it is also closely related to Syrah.

The southern part of Italy’s northeastern Alpine region, Trentino, produces quality wines from international varieties. But its most exceptional native variety, Teroldego, with plantings concentrated around the sandy, gravelly, limestone soils of its Campo Rotaliano district, makes a deep purple-hued red wine with scents and flavors of wild blackberry, herbs, espresso and cocoa.
