Folk Machine Valdiguie 2013 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

The 2013 is getting better all the time and it was great to start off with. It has the brightness of Gamay, maybe even the seriousness of Cru Beaujolais, but also an earthy grounded feeling that reminds me of Trousseau Noirs. When the cork is popped, it has a very bright, kind of cranberry thing going on, but with time open, it goes more blueberry, still a little high-toned, but fleshed out ever so slightly

Native to Southwest France, Valdiguié also maintains a fairly substantial history in California. Given its high-yielding capacity, Valdiguié became very popular during the Prohibition. Until 1980, Californians called it Napa Gamay because of its similarities to Gamay as a finished wine. But in that year, a French ampelographer, Pierre Galet correctly identified it as Valdiguié—not Gamay. Today it still grows in pockets of respected appellations throughout the state. Somm Secret—In France it is also called Gros Auxerrois.

Situated in northern Mendocino County, the Redwood Valley appellation sits at about 200 feet higher than the surrounding areas and is directly west of Potter Valley. The AVA is ideal for less common grape varieties such as Barbera, Carignan, Valdiguie and Viognier among California’s other usual suspects.
