Winemaker Notes

This is the third vintage when we have offered a standalone ottling of a Cabernet Sauvignon from Coombsville, the historic, however newly ascendant, appellation in the southeast corner of the Napa Valley. We have been working with vineyards in this area for more than a decade and it is now home to our winery. Its gravelly soils and proximity to San Pablo Bay combine to lend the wines an old-world, savory quality, delivered at an impressive level of concentration and depth. The long, careful maceration on the skins adds to the roundness of the tannins, even given their breadth and structure. The 2015 vintage is a dramatic expression, with intense deep ruby color, with fruit aromas and flavors of boysenberry, plum, and blackberry mingling with savory tones of marjoram, black pepper, and fennel pollen. It is expansive on the palate, with plenty of tannin and a lengthy finish of black fruits and salted black licorice.

Another thrilling 2015 from winemaker Andy Erickson is the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville, which comes from vines not far from the estate. It has classic cool climate notes of blue fruits, violet, chocolate, and green tobacco. These all flow to a deep, concentrated, yet finesse-driven wine that has fine tannins, terrific mid-palate depth, and a huge finish. It shows the classic Coombsville complexity, purity, and freshness, and will keep for 2-3 decades.

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville opens with strong floral and savory notes that are so typical of Coombsville. Cedar, pipe tobacco, dried herbs, mint, juniper berry and graphite are all beautifully delineated. This sensual, highly expressive Cabernet Sauvignon will drink well for another handful of years, maybe more.

A layered and rich wine with soft and juicy tannins. Full body, juicy fruit and a long, flavorful finish. Drink now.

Made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville gives up scents of cassis, blackberries and black cherries with hints of bouquet garni, pencil lead, garrigue and iron ore with a waft of black olives. Medium to full-bodied, it has a rock-solid backbone of grainy tannins and great freshness with layers of savory flavors and a long, mineral-tinged finish.

Dark and ripe, but focused, with light charcoal threads adding contrast to the steeped plum, fig and blackberry fruit flavors. Reveals an alluring smoldering feel on the finish. Best from 2020 through 2032.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.
