Light and delicate, with crunchy fruit and flint, cranberry and raspberry aromas and flavors. Light-bodied and spicy at the end. Crunchy, crisp and bright. A joy to drink everyday.

The Fattoria le Pupille 2024 Morellino di Scansano is led by Sangiovese with small percentages of Alicante and Ciliegiolo that bring extra brightness and energy. In Maremma, complex soils of volcanic deposits layered with ancient marine sediments define the character of the region, and for this wine, the Sangiovese is planted on sandstone soils that enhance elegance and aromatic lift, while other parcels feature pietra serena, red clays and limestone matched carefully to the appropriate variety. The bouquet offers redcurrant, myrtle and fragrant herbal notes of fresh rosemary and thyme, evoking the herb garden that lines the walkway to the estate’s newly inaugurated tasting room and visitor center. This wine offers phenomenal value.

The nose is a mix of crunchy red fruit and flowers, as cherries mingle with peonies, plus a touch of orange peel for texture and density. Strawberries and raspberries join more cherries on the palate, with earth and bitter citrus underneath. Fresh and vibrant.

A wine full of crunchy cherry and strawberry, with a plummy hint and some wild herbs. It's wonderfully light; a summertime quaffer!

Among Italy's elite red grape varieties, Sangiovese has the perfect intersection of bright red fruit and savory earthiness and is responsible for the best red wines of Tuscany. While it is best known as the chief component of Chianti, it is also the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and reaches the height of its power and intensity in the complex, long-lived Brunello di Montalcino. Somm Secret—Sangiovese doubles under the alias, Nielluccio, on the French island of Corsica where it produces distinctly floral and refreshing reds and rosés.

Legend has it that the region’s prized red grape, Sangiovese, took its name locally from the rusty, red “Morelli” horses that used to carriage high officials to and from the village of Scansano in the 1700s. Today the region’s most valuable wine, known as Morellino di Scansano, is of a similar blend as Chianti with a minimum of 85% Morellino (Sangiovese) and 15% other local varieties. But Scansano’s hilly, coastal location gives a full-bodied, and more fruit forward and less acid-driven red compared to its inland neighbor.
