Distiller Notes
This amaro is named for founder Patrick Miller’s grandmother, Lena Pianta. She loved southern Italian spirits and they think this one would’ve made her bar cart. A blend of 13 botanicals including gentian, rhubarb root, fennel seed, and sweet and bitter orange rest for three weeks in non-GMO neutral grain spirit. The mixture is proofed down to 40% abv and barrel aged in used whiskey barrels for a minimum of three months. When they feel it’s ready to go, they filter from the barrels and sweeten with organic cane sugar as well as organic caramel color. They add further fresh orange peel and let that sit another several days. It’s strained again and bottled.
Enjoy it on the rocks with an orange peel but it shines in a Paper Plane cocktail.
First prepared by 13th century Italian monks as herbal medicines and elixirs, Liqueurs are distilled spirits that have been combined with flavoring agents. A range of herbs, spices, nuts, fruits and flowers can be used, and a sweetener such as sugar or corn syrup is often added. While typically rather sweet, some examples are herbaceous or tart and pair exceptionally well with desserts or act as a delightful addition to cocktails.
