Winemaker Notes

Domaine Economou Assyrtiko 2016 from Crete is a highly sought-after, cult-status Greek white wine known for its intense complexity, oxidative character (like Jura wines), and incredible aging potential, offering deep notes of dried fruits, beeswax, salinity, and minerality, showcasing Yiannis Economou's masterful low-intervention, terroir-driven winemaking on old, ungrafted vines. It's a profound, gastronomic wine, often compared to high-end aged Rieslings or complex Bordeaux whites, with a unique balance of richness and refreshing acidity that evolves beautifully in the glass and cellar.

A crisp white variety full of zippy acidity, Assyrtiko comes from the volcanic Greek island of Santorini but is grown increasingly wide throughout the country today. Assyrtiko’s popularity isn’t hard to explain: it retains its acid and mineral profile in a hot climate, stands alone or blends well with other grapes and can also withstand some age. Somm Secret—On the fairly barren, windswept Mediterranean island of Santorini, Assyrtiko vines must be cultivated in low baskets, pinned to the ground. The shape serves to preserve moisture and protect the growing grapes in its interior.
