Winemaker Notes

Golden green color. Aromas of white and yellow fruits, peach, pear, apricot, citrus, verbena, iris, and robinia. The palate is round with very long finish. It is very fruity and highly elegant.

Enjoy with fish, some shellfish, Comté cheese; also, great as an aperitif.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
I continue to be impressed by this cuvée and the 2015 Lirac Cuvee de La Reine des Bois Blanc is another beautiful wine. Offering terrific notes of stone fruits, citrus blossom and a hint of freshly peeled apples, it has medium to full-bodied richness, integrated acidity and a great finish. This puppy has the freshness and purity to stand on its own, as well as the richness and depth to shine on the dinner table.

Wine Enthusiast
A full mish-mash of white Rhône varieties (the largest single component is Grenache Blanc, at 30%), this is a full-bodied, rich white. One-fourth of it is barrel fermented, which adds a clove element to the apricot and melon fruit.

Domaine de la Mordoree, Lirac, Rhone, France
Image of winery
Ideally situated at the crossroads of Provence and Languedoc, the Domaine de la Mordoree produces some of the greatest vintages of the Rhone valley: Lirac, Tavel, Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Condrieu.

Coming from a long line of winegrowers, the Domaine de la Mordoree was created in 1986 with the philosophy of growing the best possible wines. To that purpose, the best plots and the finest varieties have been chosen, and the winemakers implement cultivation methods that aim at really preserving the environment, while combining tradition and modernity.

In the course of time, 55 hectares of vineyards have been grown, spread over 35 different plots and 8 communes. This division comes from the decision of choosing the best "terroirs" with a wide variety of microclimates.

A larger region between Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Tavel, Lirac red wines resemble some of the best Cotes du Rhone Villages wines, while it’s rosés are akin to those of Tavel. The region’s quality whites, based on Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, are round and fruit-driven.

Rhône White Blends

View all wine

Full-bodied and flavorful, white Rhône blends originate from France’s Rhône Valley. Today these blends are also becoming popular in other regions, proving most successful in Spain, Australia and California. Typically some combination of Grenache blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier form the basis of a white Rhône blend with varyiong degrees of flexibility depending on the exact appellation.

In the Glass

Each variety contibutes something unique and different. Round, textural Grenache blanc gives green apple and white stone fruit flavors; weighty Marsanne adds structure and honeysuckle aromas; russet-colored Roussanne lends intriguing herbal, tea-like notes while Viognier provides a creamy texture and elegant aromatics. The flavor of the final wine will depend on the chosen components of the blend and their respective proportions.

Perfect Pairings

White Rhône blends are quite versatile food pairing wines and can work with light to medium rich meals that might often be matched to red wines. Heavier fish dishes with bold seasoning like grilled swordfish with caper butter or baked, herb-crusted mahi mahi are natural allies for these flavorful wines. Other ideal dishes include roast pork in mustard sauce, poached lobster with beurre blanc, or a rich and savory vegetable quiche. `

Sommelier Secret

In the Northern Rhône, blends of Marsanne and Roussanne are common in the appellations of St.-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage and St-Péray. Condrieu and Château-Grillet can produce single-varietal Viognier only. The Southern Rhône, on the other hand, has much more variety, with many more permitted grapes including the ones named above as well as Bourboulenc, Clairette, Picpoul and Ugni Blanc.
