Dierberg Syrah 2014 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

This Syrah shows its typical dark fruit character in the form of blueberry, blackberry, plum and violets. This vintage is also complemented by more subtle red fruit aromatics and delicate floral notes. There is a wonderful savory character on display with notes of cured ham giving support to subtle hints of oak. The palate weight is round and giving, with a fresh and vivacious finish. This wine drinks well in its youth, and should also deliver many years of cellar worthy enjoyment.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

On the eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley, the rolling hills of the tiny Happy Canyon AVA produce top quality reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and whites from Sauvignon blanc. The region’s low-nutrient soil grows smaller vines and in turn, higher quality wine grapes.
