Winemaker Notes

The 2012 Stump Jump GSM shows generous fruit characters mixed with savory nuances, subtle oak and fine, gritty tannin. Grenache is the hero, with its lovely rhubarb, blueberry, and white pepper notes. The Shiraz brings darker fruits, plums, fennel, and earth along with a more robust texture and tannin structure which fill out the mid palate. Finally, the splash of Mourvedre adds exotic dried herb, lavender, iodine and cured meat notes along with a certain elegance and mineral tannin that draws the wine to a lingering finish.

The 2012 d'Arenberg Stump Jump is a lovely GSM. Showing lots of raspberry fruit from its 62% Grenache, this wine successfully incorporates Shiraz and Mourvèdre to be a complete wine. Its balance of red and black fruits along with savory notes makes it an excellent choice with braised meats. (Tasted: February 9, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.

Known for opulent red wines with intense power and concentration, McLaren Vale is home to perhaps the most “classic” style of Australian Shiraz. Vinified on its own or in Rhône Blends, these hot-climate wines are deeply colored and high in extract with signature hints of dark chocolate and licorice. Cabernet Sauvignon is also produced in a similar style.

Whites, often made from Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc tend to be opulent and full of tropical, stone and citrus fruit.
