Winemaker Notes

This traditional Shiraz Grenache blend delivers year in, year out. Red berry and cherry fruits mix harmoniously with chocolate, black olives and dried herb characters. As the fruit sweetness hits the palate, a mouth puckering dryness also develops. Finely structured tannins make for a well-balanced and persistent finish.

Great value and super versatile wine to match with food.

Blend: 50% Grenache, 50% Shiraz

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A blend first released in 1969 and renamed in 1993 to honor D'Arry Osborn, the 2016 D'Arry's Original Shiraz-Grenache is inky purple in hue. Scents of pencil shavings accent boysenberry and black cherry fruit on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and concentrated. Hints of berry fruit, sage, bay leaf and black olives combine with dusty tannins to give the lengthy finish a welcome savory edge. This should drink well for up to a decade.

Wine & Spirits
D’Arry’s Original is one of the most consistent and consistently satisfying reds grown in South Australia. D’Arry Osborn, Chester’s father, developed it in the 1950s, having joined the family business in 1943 at the age of 16. It was a time when most McLaren Vale vineyards were devoted to grapes for fortified wines. In 1959, d’Arry released his first d’Arenberg Burgundy, with the red stripe on the label, the blend of grenache and shiraz that would become d’Arry’s Original in 1993. Chester makes it as his father did, in small open-top fermenters with headed-down boards to keep the cap of grape skins submerged. It’s foot trod, basket-pressed and aged in a mix of French oak barrels, emerging, with a few years of bottle age, as a cool, floral, zesty blend with crunchy heirloom-apple acidity and funky, meaty edges to the tannins. A firm and juicy red you could drink now or ten years from now.

This has rich raspberries and tarry blackberries with licorice notes, too. The palate has a very fleshy, vibrant and fresh edge with strong yet smooth tannins.

Wine Enthusiast
D'Arenberg's classic power play between juicy, tangy fruit and muscular tannins is in full force here. Rubarb, plum, cherry cordial and peppery, earthy spice are hemmed in by chalky, taut and slightly aggressive tannins. Like a chiseled jawline, it is angular yet expressive, finely structured and attractive. A high-protein food companion is a must. Drink now through 2029.

d'Arenberg is one of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and other Rhone varieties that have historically defined the region. A century on, their vineyards have grown to some 450 acres in McLaren Vale, including Shiraz dating back to d'Arenberg's first plantings in 1912, and nearly one-third of McLaren Vale's old bush-vine Grenache. Fourth generation winemaker, Chester Osborn, recently converted all of the family's vineyards to organics and biodynamics and moved to solar energy in the winery. All the while, in terms of winemaking, not much has changed--all the wines are basket-pressed, the reds foot-trodden during fermentation; everything is done in small batches, leading to an impressive array of bottlings every year, each showing a different facet of McLaren Vale terroir. Having been inducted into Wine & Spirits Magazine's Hall of Fame for earning a place on its Top 100 Wineries nine times, this accolade is a reflection of d'Arenberg's revered reputation worldwide.

Known for opulent red wines with intense power and concentration, McLaren Vale is home to perhaps the most “classic” style of Australian Shiraz. Vinified on its own or in Rhône Blends, these hot-climate wines are deeply colored and high in extract with signature hints of dark chocolate and licorice. Cabernet Sauvignon is also produced in a similar style.

Whites, often made from Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc tend to be opulent and full of tropical, stone and citrus fruit.

With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.
