Winemaker Notes

Youthful in color with a dark, deep red core unwinding into a bright and lively garnet rim. The nose of this wine has great expression with forthcoming red and black fruit aromas. Following these initial ripe fruit aromas, there is a complex collection of savory notes woven with lingering flavors of tomato leaf, blackcurrant, and cedar. The palate shows great intensity and complexity of flavors with the dark fruit and distinct savory notes on the nose following flawlessly onto that first sip. The fine-grain, elegant and velvety tannins really compliment the richness of the wine and promise great aging potential if stored under correct cellar conditions. This full-bodied blend has an earthy minerality and an inherent freshness that brings about a lingering, well-defined finish.

Blend: 55% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc and 19% Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2018 Three offers ripe brambly black fruit on the nose; touches of licorice and even a hint of dried honey develop with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannins on the entry and flavors of spicy red berry fruit mixed with pain d'épice and clove. This needs a little delineation on the finish but feels reassuringly long. Fine.

An expressive, medium-bodied red, with a lovely nose of cured tobacco and green olive transitioning to baked black currant and blackberry fruit, iron, ground coffee and cedar on the palate. The finish is firmed by fine tannins.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

One of the most famous and celebrated wine regions imported throughout Europe during the 18th century, Constantia was founded in 1685 by a Dutch governor named Simon van der Stel who ran a successful wine farm for many years.

Constantia vineyards, planted in ancient soil beds, climb up the east-facing slopes of the Constantiaberg, where the vines receive cool sea breezes blowing in from False Bay.
