Winemaker Notes

The Diane Cobb block is the heart of the estate Coastlands. This 1.5-acre block is both own-rooted and planted to a myriad of clones that their mother put into the ground in 1989. This might be the best Diane Cobb to date. While everyone loved the 2018, the 2019 amazingly is an improvement. It has all the spice and power that you expect from the estate along with a purity that they haven’t seen in past vintages. There is both a lushness and a gamey-ness that you don’t see in the other wines. It’s like you took a killer rock band and added an orchestra behind it.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Diane Cobb Coastlands Vineyard has a medium ruby color and pure, layered scents of raspberry jam, tobacco leaves, lemon peel, pencil shavings and saline. The light-bodied palate is chalky and refreshing, with detailed, mineral-laced berry fruits and a very long finish with expansive floral and spice tones.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.

Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
