Winemaker Notes

This wine comes from a single, one hectare parcel of the same name. The vines are very old here, 75 to 95. They are located in the Foucault home property within the village of Chacé. Le Bourg is vinified in 100% new oak from a tonnelier who only produces 250 barrels a year. Rougeard buys 50 of those each year to produce Le Bourg.

Critical Acclaim

D 98
A complex, dense aromatic framework displays elements of grilled hazelnuts, liquorice, violets and a hint of iris. The palate is a tad monolithic, with an impressive tannic structure and a dense finish, with that characteristic minty freshness. A superb, youthful wine that will stay the distance.
V 96
Charly Foucault’s farewell. An unbelievably complex Cabernet Franc. An incredibly beautiful nose of spice, cigar box, licorice, kirsch, fresh cherry and berry in the mouth, seamless and supple. An amazingly long finish. There’s something deep and profound here.

Clos Rougeard, France
This cult estate has been in the family for several generations. The Foucault brothers (Nadi and Charlie) tend exceptional vineyards, harvest at small yields, vinify in barrel, let the wines bubble for a couple of years in a glacially cold cellar and bottle without filtration. And what you get is the some of the top red wines of the Loire Valley and in the very top of France as a whole. Charles Joguet, the great winemaker of Chinon, once said: “there are two suns. One shines outside for everybody. The second shines in the Foucaults’ cellar.” The rare Chenin Blanc from their vineyards - sometimes sec, demi-sec or even moelleux - has been described by Michel Bettane as “the quintessence of Chenin”. Bettane has tasted the 1921 and listed it as one of the most memorable wines of his life. After the death of Charlie Foucault in 2015, the estate was briefly ran by Nady Foucault and his nephew Antoine (who also produces the excellent Domaine du Collier wines). In 2017, Nady chose to sell the estate to Martin Bouyges, owner of many French wineries, most notably Château Montrose in Bordeaux. Under the direction of Jacques-Antoine Toublanc, the new ownership has vowed to keep things exactly the same in the vines and the cellar.

Marked by great châteaux built with the same tuffeau limestone that is also responsible for the excavation of so many of the famed Loire caves, Saumur is famous for its Chenin blanc based sparkling wines. Inside the Saumur region, Saumur-Champigny creates some of the Loire’s greatest Cabernet Francs.

Cabernet Franc, a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, is the subtler and more delicate of the Cabernets. Today Cabernet Franc produces outstanding single varietal wines across the wine-producing world. Somm Secret—One of California's best-kept secrets is the Happy Canyon appellation of Santa Barbara. Here Cabernet Franc shines as a single varietal wine or in blends, expressing sumptuous fruit, savory aromas and polished tannins.
