Winemaker Notes

The outstanding quality of the 2012 vintage shines in this Cinq Cépages wine. The nose offers layers of complex aromas including black currant, chocolate covered Bing cherry, wild mountain blackberry fruit, cassis and a soft sweet earth note. Nuanced notes of spicy jasmine and crushed rock are intriguing and add depth to the nose. The aromas lead to a plush palate with rich flavors of boysenberry, dark chocolate and black tea. The full-bodied wine is refined with well-integrated, ripe tannins offering good structure. In signature Cinq Cépages form, this wine combines the strength of the diverse Sonoma County region to create a well-balanced and elegant wine.

Blend: 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot

WW 93
Wilfred Wong of Wine.com
A star from an excellent vintage in the North Coast of California, the 2012 Chateau St Jean Cinq Cépages exhibits fine complex notes of black fruits, sweet earth and savory herbs. The wine's medium bodied style makes it a super match with grilled lamb. Drinks well now. (Tasted: May 9, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2012 Proprietary Red Cinq Cepages is made from five Bordeaux varietals – 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in primarily French oak. The wine has a dense ruby/purple color, loads of crushed rock, cedar wood, chocolate, blackcurrant and Chinese black tea notes. It is medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannin and an impressive future. This wine will actually benefit from several years of bottle age and should last 15 or more years. 91+

Wine Enthusiast
The producer's flagship Bordeaux-inspired blend combines 84% Cabernet Sauvignon with 6% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Sanguine, it has a refined sense of cedar and pencil shavings around still-tight tannins that lean savory in tea and dark chocolate. Dried herbs dominate the finish. Cellar through 2020.
WS 90
Wine Spectator
Centered on pure, rich red berry and blackberry flavors, with dusty, cedary fresh earth scents in the background, this is very Bordeaux-like and restrained. Ends with a subtle mix of complex flavors and subtle, fine-grained tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2023.

Sonoma County

View all products

Home to a diverse array of smaller AVAs with varied microclimates and soil types, Sonoma County has something for every wine lover. Physically twice as large as Napa Valley, the region only produces about half the amount of wine but boasts both tremendous quality and variety. With its laid-back atmosphere and down-to-earth attitude, the wineries of Sonoma are appreciated by wine tourists for their friendliness and approachability. The entire county intends to become a 100% sustainable winegrowing region by 2019.

Grape varieties are carefully selected to reflect the best attributes of their sites—Dry Creek Valley’s consistent sunshine is ideal for Zinfandel, while the warm Alexander Valley is responsible for rich, voluptuous Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are important throughout the county, most notably in the cooler AVAs of Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Carneros. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah have also found a firm footing here.

Bordeaux Blends

View all products

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World, especially in California, Washington and Australia. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, these are sometimes referred to in the US as “Meritage” blends. In Bordeaux itself, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates in wines from the Left Bank of the Gironde River, while the Right Bank focuses on Merlot. Often, blends from outside the region are classified as being inspired by one or the other.

In the Glass

Cabernet-based, Left-Bank-styled wines are typically more tannic and structured, while Merlot-based wines modeled after the Right Bank are softer and suppler. Cabernet Franc can add herbal notes, while Malbec and Petit Verdot contribute color and structure. Wines from Bordeaux lean towards a highly structured and earthy style whereas New World areas (as in the ones named above) tend to produce bold and fruit-forward blends. Either way, Bordeaux red blends generally have aromas and flavors of black currant, cedar, plum, graphite, and violet, with more red fruit flavors when Merlot makes up a high proportion of the blend.

Perfect Pairings

Since Bordeaux red blends are often quite structured and tannic, they pair best with hearty, flavorful and fatty meat dishes. Any type of steak makes for a classic pairing. Equally welcome with these wines would be beef brisket, pot roast, braised lamb or smoked duck.

Sommelier Secret

While the region of Bordeaux is limited to a select few approved grape varieties in specified percentages, the New World is free to experiment. Bordeaux blends in California may include equal amounts of Cabernet Franc and Malbec, for example. Occassionally a winemaker might add a small percentage of a non-Bordeaux variety, such as Syrah or Petite Sirah for a desired result.
