Distiller Notes

Chateau Lafite Rothschild's technical team select each year Cognacs of at least 50 years of age, all produced from the best crus of the appellation, Grande Champagne and Borderies. They perpetuate the tradition, by constantly seeking for perfect blend, elegance, balance, the complexity of an exceptional Cognac, worth all their greatest wines.

Amber in color, almost mahogany. Very complex on the nose, combining wooden notes, vanilla, old Porto, dry fruits, nuts and floral (dry rose) hints, but also spicy (clove and pepper). Light and elegant structure, rich and wooden notes. It is perfectly well-balanced and the length is exceptional. The Lafite Cognac, given its rarity and long ageing, shows a complexity, suppleness and exceptional aromatic persistence which make it ideal to enjoy as a digestive at the end of a meal.

Widely regarded as the finest and most complex grape-based spirit in the world, Cognac follows rigorously strict production guidelines. It is made exclusively of wine—most commonly from Ugni Blanc—from the Charente and Charente-Maritime regions surrounding the town of Cognac in southwestern France. After a second distillation in antique copper pot stills (called charentais), the spirit is transferred to French oak barrels and aged a minimum of two years (VS). Cognac is classified by both age and region (Cru). The Grande Champagne Cru and Petite Champagne Cru, both having shallow limestone soils, are the most respected.
