Mazuelo’s acidity and tannic structure balances the fruit of Garnacha and Syrah, while a year in French barrels adds toasty oak and spice to balance the rich dark berries. Fresh acidity and mineral notes, and supple tannin. It showcases the best of each varietal, creating a balanced, complex wine.From estate vineyards, averaging 40 years-old, are located at about 2,000 feet along the sloping sides of the Sierra de Montsant. All of the vineyards are dry farmed without use of pesticides or herbicides and the winery is solar-powered. Each varietal is hand-harvested and fermented separately before being transferred to French oak barrels for 12 months aging.
Blend: 40% Mazuelo (Carignan), 40% Garnacha, 20% Syrah
With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.
