Winemaker Notes

The flagship of the estate. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in steel cuve and the three varieties are vinified separately. They are assembled prior to barrel aging, which lasts at three years in both 500L “botti” and a variety of larger formats, with no batonnage. No sulphur is added at any stage until a minimal dose at bottling. In 1996, the Conti sisters added the name ‘il rosso delle donne’ to add their mark to the family tradition.

The 2018 Boca Il Rosso delle Donne is a very pure, focused wine built more on linear energy rather than power. Dried cherry, orange peel, spice, mint, anise and alpine herbs give this mid-weight, ethereal wine plenty of nuance and presence. The 2018 is fabulous. Readers who appreciate subtle reds will adore it.

Attracting the most glory, prestige and fame to the Piedmont region, Nebbiolo in all of its expressions—Barolo, Barbaresco, Roero, Ghemme and Gattinara—creates a complex wine, truly unique for its delicate qualities combined with strength and a great potential to improve over time.

But Nebbiolo isn’t all there is to red wine from Piedmont! Barbera is the most planted variety and historically most popular as a dependable, food-friendly, everyday wine.

Beyond these two, a surprising number of red varieties call Piedmont their home. Worth a try include Dolcetto for its bold concentration and aromas of spice cake. Other grapes to investigate include Freisa, Croatina, Brachetto, Grignolino and Pelaverga.
