    Winemaker Notes

The 2005 Cabernet Franc exhibits a sensational inky ruby red color with ripe cassis, plum and berry flavors. The palate is full and round complemented by the integrated oak, cedar and a hint of dark chocolate. The wine finishes with fine but firm tannins.

    Carrefour Vineyards, California
Greg and Marilyn Nitz started their 18 acre vineyard in 1997 when they planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In 2000, Sauvignon Blanc and Petite Verdot were planted and more Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were added. The ultimate goal was to make wine from their estate vineyards. Beginning in 2003 their dream came true. Greg and Marilyn now produce estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. Being Pinot Noir lovers as well, Greg and Marilyn needed to purchase grapes since their microclimate is too warm to grow Pinot Noir. Carrefour purchases grapes from the renowned Carneros region from Truchard Vineyards. The first Pinot Noir was produced in 2002. Kelly De'lanni, formerly a winemaker at St. Supery winery, is consulting Winemaker while John Truchard, owner of Vinewerkes Management Company, manages the vineyard. Carrefour is the French name for "crossroads" or a "meeting place," which paints the perfect picture of food, wine and friends coming together.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
