Winemaker Notes

100% Moscatel Tinto from 80 year old vines. Grapes are destemmed and undergo spontaneous fermentation on the lees. Maceration is long (about 40-50 days) with low extraction. Aged in 1,000 Liter concrete eggs for 6-7 months unfiltered.

The 2022 Moscatel Tinto fermented in concrete eggs with some 10% to 15% full clusters that were foot trodden and then some skins were removed to have a higher ratio of juice to skin to achieve an elegant wine with more finesse, moderate alcohol (13%) and some herbal and minty aromas and hints of flowers, delicate and aromatic. The wine has a lighter color than in previous years—they used less skins and shorter macerations—and the profile has changed and the palate is also lighter. Delicious.

Beyond the usual suspects, there are hundreds of red grape varieties grown throughout the world. Some are indigenous specialties capable of producing excellent single varietal wines, while others are better suited for use as blending grapes. Each has its own distinct viticultural characteristics, as well as aroma and flavor profiles, offering much to be discovered by the curious wine lover. In particular, Portugal and Italy are known for having a multitude of unique varieties but they can really be found in any region.
