    Winemaker Notes

Big and robust is the style of our Canoe Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This is one rich mouthful of fruit, spice and tannin. It experiences long maceration during fermentation to develop its concentrated style. Each barrel in the final Cabernet blend is individually selected for intensity and structure. Barrel aging lasts for 24 months in 100 percent French oak barrels. The aromas of bright fruit, jalapeno peppers and cassis are classic descriptors with balanced tannins and a hint of cedar fleshing out the mouth.

"Fresh red and black currant flavors fill this very berried cabernet with a surety of fruit. The lovely firmness of texture plays out along a clean line of tannni, a dusty linearity that keeps teh burts of flavor compact and contained. Clean, clear and potent, this should age with grace."

Canoe Ridge Hayden Mouat - Winemaker Winery Image

Canoe Ridge Vineyard is one of Washington State’s most recognized wineries, with its namesake vineyard established in 1989 in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. Varieties are focused on Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The name comes from a ridge by the vineyard located along the mid-Columbia River, neat the town of Paterson. The famed explorers Lewis and Clark named this crest of land as they journeyed down Columbia River in 1805. From the river, the adventurers thought the ridge resembled an overturned canoe. The Walla-Walla based winery marked its 20th anniversary in 2014.

Bone-dry deserts, upriver winds from the Columbia River and long sunny days make the perfect conditions for growing wine grapes in the Horse Heaven Hills. Fine tannins and deep concentrates fruit flavors are characteristics that put our region on the map- synonymous with some of the most acclaimed wines in the Northwest.

Washington produces so many exciting wines, and that definitely includes Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. With over 10,000 acres under vine, Cabernet Sauvignon is now the most widely-grown varietal in the state. Terrific examples hail from sub-appellations like Red Mountain, Wahluke Slope, Horse Heaven Hills and Walla Walla Valley. One of the fascinations of these Columbia Valley Cabs is that they so often seem to have one foot in the New World and one in the Old. Representing the former are characteristics like the ripe, forward fruit that results from long sunny days during the growing season (up to two hours longer than in much of California). Old World similarities include an undeniable brightness from acidity, as well as notes of herbs, graphite and a dusty, sometimes gravelly minerality.

Whether you’re looking for a budget bottle for everyday enjoyment, or a stellar, world-class wine with tremendous aging potential, Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines can deliver the goods! Among the many fine options are bottles from Columbia Crest, Chateau Ste. Michelle, L’ecole #41, Quilceda Creek and Leonetti.
