    Winemaker Notes

The dark, opaque ruby color gives a good indication of the level of extraction achieved in this wine. The nose is heavy with dark fruits and essential oil of spring flowers. This is followed by strong varietal flavors of dark chocolate, cassis and spice. Full, round, tannins produce the trademark rich chalky finish that our soil imparts on the wine. While very rewarding to drink now, will easily cellar for up to twelve additional years.

Pair with Filet Mignon with Bordelaise Sauce.

Blend: 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 3% Cabernet Franc

    Calcareous Vineyard, California
    Calcareous Vineyard Winery Image
Father and daughter Lloyd Messer and Dana Brown realized their dream of finding a place to express their passion for wine in 2000, when they established Calcareous Vineyards on one of the highest limestone plateaus on Paso Robles’ westside. Both Lloyd and Dana, experienced wine distributors in their native Iowa, recognized the westside of Paso Robles had potential to produce world class wines. Their acquisition of 442 acres atop solid calcareous rock reaching 1,800 feet above sea level confirmed their dedication to producing the highest quality, terroir driven wines possible. It is a labor of love to cultivate fruit on this challenging land, but the reward is immediately apparent when tasting the wines. Calcareous has for over a decade now, produced a collection of world–class blends and varietal wines that exhibit Paso Robles’ claim to being "distinct, different." Lloyd passed on in 2006, and Dana advances their vision.

As Paso Robles, California has soared in number of wineries and gained in popularity, Cabernet Sauvignon has firmly taken root as the region’s number one varietal. Alone, it accounts for just over 40% of plantings and is grown throughout both the western and eastern sides of the appellation. Though viticulture here dates back to the 18th century, Cabernet Sauvignon didn’t emerge as a significant grape here until the 1970’s. But since then it has definitely made up for lost time.

Legendary winemaker and consultant Andre Tchelistcheff first recognized Paso’s potential with Cabernet Sauvignon in the early 1960’s. The calcareous soil and dramatic diurnal temperature changes of Paso’s westside particularly intrigued him. Today modern winemaking techniques and focused experimentation with various clones, rootstocks and vineyard strategies optimize the region's ideal combination of soil and climate to deliver the best fruit possible.

The results are evident in the glass. Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon can be mesmerizing, with rich aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, black cherry, graphite, toasty oak, vanilla and spice. The structure, balance and unbridled opulence of these wines impress from first sip to last. Not surprisingly, Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignons have steadily grown in reputation, not just in the U.S., but around the world.
