Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Ripe, clean red fruits dominate: black cherry, cassis and raspberry are showy in the nose with a hint of cedar, full of primary fruit. The fruity, effusive aromas show well in the mouth with good intensity as it enters the palate, with grippy but moderate tannins framing the wine.

The wine certainly has the body and structure for a New York or Ribeye cut of steak, and a steak frite, turkey chili or Beef Stroganoff would be excellent matches as well.

Spicy blackberry and sage are dotted with cedar in this harmoniously balanced wine, which also shows notes of red plum, espresso, and bittersweet dark chocolate. Good tannin structure is evident. Aged in 25% new French oak.

Butternut, California
Butternut produces Chardonnay from grapes sourced from a number of different California vineyards to broaden the flavor profile and enhance your drinking experience. The growing regions include Napa, Sonoma, Sierra Foothills and Monterey. Aromas of peach, hazelnut and spiced candied apple leap from the glass. On the palette, Butternut exhibits round, creamy notes of fig, butterscotch and sweet oak. Butternut is like your mother's Chardonnay, only better.

Covering the most vine acreage in the state compared to any other red wine variety, Cabernet Sauvignon produces as much wine in California as Merlot and Pinot Noir combined. The state’s diverse terrain and microclimates, as well as the freedom of its winemakers, allow for an incredible range of wine styles from this single grape.

California’s most famous region—and especially for Cabernet Sauvignon—is the acclaimed Napa Valley. While Cabernet is successful throughout the world, rarely has it achieved such merit as it does from the Napa Valley. At this point the two are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other.

Napa’s closest neighbor, Sonoma County, does an impressive job keeping up with Napa’s fame and glory. Alexander Valley, Sonoma Mountain, Moon Mountain and Knights Valley contribute to the lot of some of California’s top-rated Cabernet Sauvignon.

Lake County in California’s North Coast has become a focus for some of Napa’s more respected growers. From the Central Coast come iconic examples of classic California Cabernet; Lodi and the Sierra Foothills are great budget-friendly sources of amicable Cabernets.
