The aroma of this light golden Genever is characterised by sweet and fruity notes of dried fruit, such as apricot, but also leather and grains. Those same wonderful notes also emerge in the flavour. You taste hints of toffee and licorice. This Genever is aged for a year in oak bourbon barrels and skillfully blended by our distiller from fine-grain distillates and the purest grains (7%) and malt wine (25%).
Boomsma is an independent family-owned distillery which produces award-winning artisanal Dutch Genevers (the gin’s forerunner) as well as Bitters since its foundation in 1883. The company, run today by the fifth generation, crafts a wide range of spirits while keeping the family tradition and centuries’ old recipes alive through their flagship Friesland spirits.
The Boomsma “Jonge” and “oude” Genevers are still produced according to the process and principles set by Dirk Boomsma, the company founder. The blend of grain alcohol, malt wine, corn wine, botanicals and juniper distillate gives those spirits their rich and original flavors.
From the Dutch word for “juniper,” Genever is a blended spirit made in Belgium or Holland. To produce Genever, a Whiskey-like distillate from a combination of malted grains is combined with a neutral grain spirit, similar to Vodka, and then infused or further distilled with juniper and a wide range of spices and botanicals. It can be clear, lightly aged and light in color, or aged in oak for several years. Jonge (young) Genevers are usually milder in taste compared to oude (old) Genever, whose smokiness and heavier malt notes resemble Scotch Whiskies more than London Dry Gins.
