#4 Whisky Advocate Top 20 Whiskies of 2023

Little Book Chapter 7, "In Retrospect," is the seventh chapter in the Little Book Whiskey series. "In Retrospect" offers any curious whiskey drinker a chance to explore where American Whiskey can go by looking back to where it’s been. Now, with six chapters written, the seventh chapter of Little Book pushes the story ahead, building on what’s come before in ways not yet seen. Little Book Chapter 7 is a blend of seven different liquid streams, blending one liquid from each of the previous chapters, then adding a record seventh. "In Retrospect" is a nod to the past but also sets the course for what’s next.

Deep russet with golden hues. Subtle sweetness with notes of clove spice. Slightly floral with light smoke and sweet vanilla, followed by caramel

Professional Ratings

For this seventh chapter of the Little Book series, eighth-generation Jim Beam master distiller Freddie Noe blended the liquids of the previous six chapters with a new one. It’s quite a combination—a mix of straight bourbons aged 18, 17, 9, and 4 years, along with 10 year old and 4 year old ryes, and 5 year old straight malt that was finished in applewood-smoked barrels. The result is a rich array of flavors— chocolate cake, baked apples, and cinnamon—with plenty of heat, spice, and a long finish. There’s great unity of flavor, and it carries its proof remarkably well. Our highest-scoring Little Book to date.

What Whiskey will not cure, there is no cure for.

Coming in a multitude of styles depending on its origin, Whisk(e)y’s flavors range across the board from the sweet, caramel and vanilla-dominated American Bourbons to the briny, peat-heavy Islay Single Malts from Scotland. Though production methods differ widely, all Whiskeys are made by distilling beer made from some type of grain, such as barley, corn, wheat or rye. After the distillation process is complete, the new, clear spirit is transferred to wooden casks where it matures, a process that can take up to thirty years or more.
