Winemaker Notes
In 1933, Joan VivesGibert reorganized the productive structure of Can Macia to elaborate cellar aged sparkling wines that first appeared on the market during Christmas of 1936. Still to this day, the family tradition has continued, adding forces of technological innovation and improved quality.
Today, Maria Casanovas Giro and her father, Jordi Casanovas Bohigas, a descendants of the family who have owned Can Macia since its origins, organize and manage the estate and its cellar. Ariadna Casanovas Giro, Jordi's eldest daughter and Maria's sister, is in charge of exports. Victoria Giro -married to Jordi, and mother of Ariadna and Maria-, is the proprietor of Can BatlleVell, where they have created a modern cellar designed by Victoria herself as she is the architect.
Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
The highest wine growing zone in Spanish Cataluña, Terra Alta is south of Priorat and Montsant. Here growers are following the trends of Priorat, recovering Garnacha blanca vines for white wines and focusing on quality red blends.
