    Bodegas Pinord , Spain
In 1942, José María Tetas set up the current winery in Vilafranca del Penedès, just four kilometres from the original estate. Having inherited the family methods and traditions, it has gradually grown until it has now become one of the most highly reputed wineries in the region and the whole country. At the present time, PINORD’s production facilities have an output capacity of over five million bottles per year. Nevertheless, traditional family standards are maintained and care is taken to avoid over production, something that generally results in a loss of quality. Two enologists and a laboratory with the most up-to-date analytical and quality control equipment ensure that the long-standing family tradition continues to be compatible with today’s most demanding quality, production and health controls, demonstrating that traditional methods are not necessarily at variance with the implementation of the most rigorous standards. The early wines soon began to win a name and prestige for themselves as a result of their high quality. Since then, generation after generation, year after year, the family’s vineyards have continued to expand, the local varieties have considerably improved and the family name has become inseparably linked to the wine of El Penedès. The Bodegas Pinord vineyards are situated just a few miles from Vilafranca. We are proud to be able to say that they are grouped round the Muntanyans Hermitage standing on a hill from which you can see a large part of El Penedès.

Notoriously food-friendly, long-lasting and Spain’s most widely planted grape, Tempranillo is the star variety of red wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The Rioja terms Joven, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva indicate both barrel and bottle time before release. Traditionally blended in Rioja with Garnacha, plus a bit of Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano, the Tempranillo in Ribera del Duero typically stands alone. Somm Secret—Tempranillo claims many different names depending on location. In Penedès, it is called Ull de Llebre and in Valdepeñas, goes by Cencibel. Known as Tinta Roriz in Portugal, Tempranillo plays an important role in Port wine.

A superior source of white grapes for the production of Spain’s prized sparkling wine, Cava, the Penedes region is part of Catalunya and sits just south of Barcelona. Medio Penedès is the most productive source of the Cava grapes, Macabeo, Xarel-lo, and Parellada. Penedes also grows Garnacha and Tempranillo (here called Ull de Llebre in Catalan), for high quality reds and rosès.
