Winemaker Notes

The 40-year-old vines that are used for the Ontanon Crianza grow on the slopes of the Sierra Yergas, just south of the River Ebro in Rioja Baja. The grapes need the warm summer days to ripen to full maturity, but also the cold nights to increase acidity levels. The wines of this mountainous region of Rioja are known for showcasing crisp acidity as well as an elegant, yet full and dense fruit profile, with notes of mineral and herbal extract from the unique native soil. The wine expresses subtle aromas of black cherry with overtones of spice and offers voluptuous fruit, with a delicate framework of natural acidity that opens up and deepens over time.

This Crianza pairs well with roast chicken, game and meat.

Blend: 90% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha

Cherry, berry and plum flavors are fresh and pure in this supple red. Light smoky and leafy flavors add interest, while juicy acidity keeps this lively through the finish. Drink now through 2019.

Raquel, Ruben, Leticia and Maria Perez Cuevas make up the current generation of the Perez Cuevas family to carry on a tradition of the wine-making in the eastern part of La Rioja (Rioja Baja). Their father, Gabriel, inherited the parcels of his family's vineyards, just outside the township of Quel on the higher slopes of the Sierra de Yerga mountain range. When Gabriel took over in the 1970s, he began making wine from these vineyards rather than selling the fruit, as had been done before. He was determined to produce wine that embodied the region of Quel, where his family had deep root and where he believes some of the highest quality wines from Rioja are produced. As wine sales continued to increase, Gabriel began purchasing more and more vineyard land in his native region. During his father's and grandfather's time, Quel was one of the epicenters of "quality wines" from Rioja.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
