Winemaker Notes

A deep, almost opaque garnet color, with dark highlights that speak of time and dedication. On the nose, black fruit (blackberry, blueberry, and ripe plum) with spicy notes (clove and cinnamon) and hints of roasted coffee encircling the fruit and the minerality, creating a unique sensory universe. The palate is powerful, broad, and well-structured, with attractive tannins that meld into fruity aromas, leading to a long-lasting finish. Composed of 40-45 year old bush vines of Tempranillo, Graciano, and Mazuelo, the wine is aged for 10 months in French oak barrels followed by four months in Caucasian oak.

Blend: 81% Tempranillo, 14% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo

Fresh and focused, with a core of ripe red and black cherry and currant fruit flavors meshed with dense, fine-grained tannins. Enticing details of violet, wild thyme, rosemary, vanilla and anise accent the fruit profile and linger on the finish. Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo. Drink now through 2040.

The 2022 A Mano blends 84% Tempranillo, 14% Graciano and 2% Mazuelo from Rioja Alta. Aged for ten months in new French oak, then four months in Caucasian oak, it opens with camphor, aromatic herbs and rosemary, followed by violet and faint liqueur-like notes. The oak and fruit tannins are well-integrated despite the moderate alcohol (13.5%) before the finish of ripe black fruit.

The 2022 Bodegas Lan VIÑA LAN A MANO RIOJA is a deep, saturated ruby with a purple hue, this shows a fragrant nose of dried spices and tart berries. Medium- to full-bodied and jazzy on the palate, it delivers lively black fruit with a touch of oak, finishing bright, energetic, and clean, making it a natural partner for a refined Spanish dish like cochinillo asado, where the crisp, succulent roast suckling pig mirrors the wine’s vibrancy and spice while its richness is lifted beautifully by the wine’s bright, polished finish. (Tasted: March 30, 2026, San Francisco, CA, USA)

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
