Savory and “traditional,” with black walnuts, licorice, dried earth, dark mushroom and tree bark to the blackberries and plums. Hints of vanilla and caramelized orange. Medium to full body with firm, dusty tannins and a lengthy finish.

The 2015 Viña Pomal Gran Reserva, 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano is quite ripe with 14.5% alcohol and noticeable oak after 24 months in American oak barrels and one more year in oak vats. 2015 was a ripe and powerful year. The wine has abundant toasty and smoky notes, like the oak was newish and seems to have marked it quite intensely, making it a bit too modern for the Gran Reserva profile. The palate is very oaky too. For fans of oaky Gran Reserva wines.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
