Winemaker Notes

This vintage has similar flavors to what we saw last season, with a juicy entry and berry cobbler, cinnamon and vanilla flavors. Mocha and wood spices form a rich finish with seamless tannins.

One of my pet peeves in the wine industry is finding the best values possible, and that can often be a challenge. Famous wineries that are high in demand, often command prices high above the reality of the wine's worth—they are simply charging what the market can bear. The 2014 Benziger Cabernet is excellent, a real deal in the marketplace. The wine's ripe fruit, savory spices, and freshness make it perfect for those wanting top wines at decent prices. While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
