Winemaker Notes

Straight-up winemaking. No Pumps. No augers. Whole bunches were taken from the vine, and most were placed directly in to a small open fermenter. Roughly 20 percent were dropped through a de-stemmer to sprinkle some whole berries throughout. The harvest was simply placed in a cool corner of the cellar and left alone to ferment naturally. Towards the end of fermentation, the grapes were intermittently foot-stomped over the coarse of three days, followed by a few days of delestage to aerate the wine, evolve the tannins, open the aromas and stabilize the magnificnet colour. The fruit was then de-stemmed for a further three weeks of fermentation and maceration on skins. The wine was then basket pressed to large format (500L) French oak puncheon barrels, of which 10% were new and the remainder ranging from three to five years old. The resulting wine displays vast aromatic range, deep, complex flavours and a structure with such impeccable intricacy. Its soft but firm touch can be enjoyed now, but as this site has demonstrated over the many decades, Syrah from Yeringberg is sure to age for many, many years to come

Sourced from the Yeringberg Vineyard, the 2014 Raphaella Shiraz is a terrific effort. It delivers dark berry and plum fruit, leavened with savory notes of tapenade and roasted meat. Eighty percent whole-bunch fermented and aged in large-format oak, it bears more of a resemblance to Cornas than to most Australian Shiraz. No, it lacks that granitic structure, but it is firm and should offer at least a decade of ageability.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

As the most important area of wine production in Victoria today, the Yarra Valley is most popular for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which account for over half of vineyard acreage. A gentle, rolling and rural region alongside the Margaret River, the Yarra Valley has a cool maritime climate with a lengthy growing season, perfect for these cool-climate varieties.

Two styles of Pinot Noir are possible here. The warmer Lower Yarra Valley with sandy, loam soils, produces plush and fruity Pinot Noir while the cooler, higher-elevation Upper Yarra Valley with soils of young red basalt, produces more angular and mineral-driven Pinot Noir.

Yarra Valley Chardonnay is among the best in Australia. To preserve the floral aromatics and fresh citrus flavors for which this area’s Chardonnay is so appreciated, time in barrel is restrained (though barrel fermentation is common). The best Yarra Valley Chardonnays display brilliant acidity, leesy characteristics, citrus, stone fruit and flavors of ginger and spice.

Shiraz and Cabernet find success in parts of this region as well.
