Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Tasting Notes:
Aroma of black pepper, blueberry, blackberry, with slight bacon fat smokiness. The fruit quality in the flavors becomes ripe blackberry, with notes of smoky bacon and spicy vanilla oak. The intense fruit character carries into the finish with lingering oak and black pepper.

Winemaker's Notes:
This vintage produced fruit of great intensity, with some vintage specific flavors and aromas, notably the black pepper element. For me, it is reminiscent of Syrah from the Northern Rhone. I chose specific barrels of Estate Syrah for this bottling to emphasize that distinct quality. The entire block of vineyard was picked at the perfect maturity, and fermented in our rotary fermenter. The rotary speeds fermentation, promoting ripe fruit characters and softer tannins. This wine was aged for 14 months in new French Oak. Bottled in March 2004. 700 cases made.

Badger Mountain, Washington
Badger Mountain Winery Image
Badger Mountain Vineyard was founded by Bill and Greg Powers in 1982; the transition to organic viticulture began in 1988. Since that time we have not used chemical herbicides, insecticides, fungicides or synthetic fertilizers in our vineyard. We have relied on only organically approved and naturally occurring substances for all vineyard applications. In 1990, Badger Mountain Vineyard became the first vineyard to be Certified Organic by the Washington State Department of Agriculture. The production of premium fruit is virtually assured by advantageous use of our assets: favorable location, climate, volcanic soil, and organic techniques.
