Winemaker Notes

This prized vineyard sits on the steepest part of our estate at the edge of the Vaca Mountains. The rocky terrain of this secluded site offers excellent drainage and lots of nutrients. The fruit from this higher elevation produces a purer and more intensely flavorful wine. Offers generous blue and black fruit, excellent viscosity and a well-integrated tannin structure. There is great balance for those who prefer drinking cabs at a younger age. However, this is a wine worthy of extended time in the cellar and patience will be rewarded.

COMMENTARY: The 2017 Bacio Divino Janzen Cloudy's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is lovely, generous, and showing well at this early stage. TASTING NOTES: This wine shines with aromas and flavors of red and black fruits. Hints of spices follow through in the finish. Try it with grilled lamb chops. By Bacio Divino. Aromatically the richest of the 2017 Janzen trio if by just a bit, the Cloudy’s Vineyard bottling sports a distinctive mocha-like aspect and lots of loam soil smells in league with its ample, fully ripe, blackcurrant fruit and liberal complement of creamy oak. It is full and supple in feel with particularly finegrained tannins affording back-palate firmness without pushing it toward puckery astringency, and, while a Cabernet that ideally wants another half-dozen years of age, it is surprisingly easy to access in its youth.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
