Winemaker Notes

A pure, yet complex example of Margaret River Chardonnay with half the wine matured for eight months in French oak barriques, and the remainder in stainless steel tanks to retain fruit freshness and vibrancy. The finished wine is cellared on the Estate for another 12 months to ensure total balance and harmonization between fruit purity and oak complexity.

RP 91
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Scents of crème brûlée and lemon custard emerge from the glass, later adding hints of peach sherbet on the palate. This 2018 Chardonnay is medium-bodied, with gentle oak accents, a silky texture and a long, citrusy finish. Nicely executed in a middle-of-the-road style, this crowd-pleaser...

Ashbrook Estate, Australia
Ashbrook Estate Ashbrook Vineyard Winery Image
Now a 3rd generation winery, established by the Devitt family in 1975, Ashbrook produced its first commercial wine in 1979 and completed its 37th vintage in 2015. Currently owned and operated by Carol and Brian Devitt, daughter Catherine Edwards, son Richard and son-in-law Kingsley Edwards, Ashbrook has now been a family business for over 40 years. Only grapes handpicked and grown on the Estate are used and all processing, winemaking, bottling and packaging are closely controlled using the Estate’s own state of the art facilities.

Australia’s pre-eminent wine authority and critic, James Halliday, has awarded Ashbrook Estate a five star rating, an accolade afforded to only Australia’s top wineries. He describes the meaning of his five star rating as "Outstanding winery capable of producing wines of very high quality and, did so this year. Also will usually have at least two wines rated at 95 points or above."

Western Australia

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.
