Winemaker Notes

Delicate aromas of raspberry, cherry, and a hint of classic Carneros rose petals set the tone for this beautiful Estate grown Pinot Noir. Polished flavors of brambleberry, plum and lavender, accompanied by a bright acidity, grant the wine a superb balance on the palate. The oak is subtle, with a light vanilla and white pepper notes behind the forward fruit. The 2017 vintage is one of great elegance that amazes the senses and continues to evolve in the glass.

Wine Enthusiast
Delicate, crunchy red fruit is lifted by a floral accent in this estate-farmed wine. Crushed rock and iron components add complexity and texture to a rounded, rich and balanced expression of the variety.
WS 90
Wine Spectator
Lithe, with solid power behind the dried cherry and dark currant flavors, backed by crisp tannins. Focused minerality shows on the finish. Drink now through 2023.

Artesa (ahr TESS uh) means "craftsman" and connotes "handcrafted" in Catalan, language of Barcelona and their owner, Group Raventós-Codorníu –Spain's oldest winemaking family, one of the world's oldest wineries, owner of 14 wineries and exporting to over 100 countries–.

In 1991 , this family ventured to a new world: a sea-facing hillside in the Napa Valley, with rocky soils and a favorable coastal climate. Artesa's architecturally-acclaimed facility opened then, named as Codorniu Napa, and dedicated solely to méthode champenoise sparkling wine production.

The arrival of a world-class winemaker and a $10 million conversión shifted their focus dramatically in 1997. The winery reopened in 1999 with the inaugural release of ultra-premium, estate grown, artesan still wines.

While Artesa is a relative newcomer to Napa, it has received a rich heritage of five centuries of history with 15 generations of a remarkable winemaking family, which are put now at the service of their mission: crafting distinctive wines and sharing them with joy.

As early as the 1970s Carneros became known as a source of terrific Pinot Noir, and was one of the first California regions to gain such a reputation. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog and thin clay soils are tailor-made for the variety. Another factor in Pinot Noir’s prominent place here is vintners’ willingness to experiment widely. The history of the grape in Carneros is marked by continuous research into clonal variations, viticultural techniques and site selection. Careful evaluation over time has revealed a signature flavor profile as well. Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth and cola appear time and again in Carneros Pinot Noir. To this day the appellation remains one of California’s standard bearers for the variety.
