Winemaker Notes

Yielding a wine that reflects the expertise of Juan Carlos’ ancestors and the passion of those who want to keep the spirit of the old vineyard alive, the delicate balance of this vineyard’s natural micro-ecosystem is what many believe gives Viña El Pisón its singular character and an enviable sequence of round tannins from year to year. Deep purple in color with a ruby-red rim, this wine has intriguing aromas and flavors of sweet spice, truffle, vanilla, wild berries and blackberry liqueur. Complex and meaty on the palate, with a soft minerality on the mid-palate.

The 2006 Vina El Pison comes from a single Tempranillo vineyard planted in 1945 on pure limestone. The wine was aged for 16-18 months in new French oak. It has an ethereal nose found only in the greatest wines. Toasty oak, wood smoke, truffle, wild blueberry, and blackberry liqueur are striking and complex. This is followed by a layered wine with an elegant personality that still has plenty of grip, breadth, and length. It is a tour de force that will provide pleasure over the next 20-25 years.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
