Winemaker Notes

Pale white gold color. Delicate, tropical, citrusy aromas and flavors of grapefruit custard, guava, and plantain with a supple, bright, fruity light-to-medium body and a smooth, relaxed lemon curd and wheatgrass finish with no oak. A solid, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc sipper. Serve this enticing wine chilled alongside seafood, light pasta dishes, and chicken.

COMMENTARY: While there have been a few nice Sauvignon Blancs from the Shenandoah Valley of California AVA, many of the wines have been less than scintillating. The 2017 Andis Sauvignon Blanc is a revelation and has me thinking that I should spend more time in this part of California. TASTING NOTES: This wine exhibits plenty of ripe fruit, yet remains sassy and fine on the palate. Its aromas and flavors of mineral, chalk, and citrus are beautifully put together. Pair its lively finish with seared halibut in a piquant sauce. (Tasted: August 10, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

As the lower part of the greater Sierra Foothills appellation, Amador is roughly a plateau whose vineyards grow at 1,200 to 2,000 feet in elevation. It is 100 miles east of both San Francisco and Napa Valley. Most of its wineries are in the oak-studded rolling hillsides of Shenandoah Valley or east in Fiddletown, where elevations are slightly higher.

The Sierra Foothills growing area was among the largest wine producers in the state during the gold rush of the late 1800s. The local wine industry enjoyed great success until just after the turn of the century when fortune-seekers moved elsewhere and its population diminished. With Prohibition, winemaking was totally abandoned, along with its vineyards. But some of these, especially Zinfandel, still remain and are the treasure chest of the Sierra Foothills as we know them.

Most Amador vines are planted in volcanic soils derived primarily from sandy clay loam and decomposed granite. Summer days are hot but nighttime temperatures typically drop 30 degrees and the humidity is low, making this an ideal environment for grape growing. Because there is adequate rain throughout the year and even snow in the winter, dry farming is possible.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.
