The Alexakis 2025 Assyrtiko offers a subtle expression of the variety with delicate notes of white almond, saline minerality and restrained orchard fruit. Apple and citrus flavors are present but understated, giving the wine a lower-intensity profile than many young Assyrtiko wines from around Greece. Sandy clay soils rich in calcium and high-elevation vineyards in Heraklion reaching 650 meters above sea level contribute finesse and aromatic precision, while cooling maritime winds from the Aegean Sea help preserve freshness. Lean and linear in character, the wine is not built around mid-palate weight or concentration, favoring instead a lighter, more neutral style with a shorter drinking window. Fermented in stainless steel and aged for three months on the fine lees, it finishes with light notes of salt, mineral and white nut.
A crisp white variety full of zippy acidity, Assyrtiko comes from the volcanic Greek island of Santorini but is grown increasingly wide throughout the country today. Assyrtiko’s popularity isn’t hard to explain: it retains its acid and mineral profile in a hot climate, stands alone or blends well with other grapes and can also withstand some age. Somm Secret—On the fairly barren, windswept Mediterranean island of Santorini, Assyrtiko vines must be cultivated in low baskets, pinned to the ground. The shape serves to preserve moisture and protect the growing grapes in its interior.
