This is their classic wine. The oldest of the Domain’s wines, it was created during the 1970s to highlight the long-standing family vineyard. Vines for this wine are located in the heart of the appellation, facing those we first replanted. Les Vieilles Vignes is a wine that reflects our history and our winemaking know-how.

The older vine cuvée, the 2020 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes is 100% Syrah. It's similarly inky hued and offers up full-bodied aromas and flavors of ripe black cherries, graphite, bouquet garni, and iron. It's deep, concentrated, and powerful on the palate, with flawless balance, building yet silky tannins, and a great, great finish.

A floral wave of violets and iris greets the nose, leading to a layer of fresh cassis. The palate is dynamic, featuring mouthwatering acidity and bold, precise flavors of black cherry and plum. The finish is long, marked by black pepper, spice, and a fine weave of oak that adds complexity and depth.

Decanter
Dark, dense and black-fruited, with a dab of blackcurrant jelly among the fresh berry fruits. Ripe, but not problematically so, with a grand, noble, velvety palate. Good sense of intensity and salinity. Powerful, but lifted. Not heavy, but ripe in fruit and with great freshness. Thankfully no overripe flavours. As hoped, this has filled out well since tasting from barrel. Try to keep until 2029. From lieux-dits Combe, Patou, La Côte, Tézier, Mazards, Chaillot, old vines of Chapelle St Pierre (the same plots for the cuvée Les Chailles, but further up the slopes). Racked in May, bottled in June, released in the autumn. 20% whole bunch, three weeks maceration, 20 months in oak, 10%-15% new.

The sample presented of Voge's 2020 Cornas Vieilles Vignes was reassuringly excellent, with gently lifted, floral scents of violets, cassis and crushed stone. Full-bodied, deep and powerful, concentrated and rich but still almost painfully unformed, this needs time in the cellar. It's a blend of several parcels, aged in barrel but with just 15% or so new oak.

Wine Spectator
Concentrated and polished, with good energy, this hefty red features a core of sweet black cherry, singed tobacco, wood spice and mulled plum, all wrapped around a spine of iron. Reveals incense and violet notes, and though the tannins aren't too grippy, this still needs time for its tightly wound layers to unfurl. Best from 2025 through 2035.
Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
Distinguished as a fine Syrah producing zone since the 18th century, Cornas, like Cote Rotie, is made up of vineyards covering steep and hard-to-work, granite terraces. As a result the region’s wines fell out of favor during the mid 20th century when the global market was more focused on bulk wines and vineyards that yielded high quantities. It wasn’t until the 1980s when a group of energetic young winemakers reestablished the integrity of these precipitous terraces and also began making an ultra-modern style of Syrah. The new style didn’t need a decade before it was drinkable and could reach the consumer faster than the region’s traditional wines. Given the new quality coming out of the zone, its popularity once again soared and today a good Cornas can easily challenge many of those from Hermitage. Characteristics of Syrah from Cornas include teeth-staining flavors of blackberry jam, plum, pepper, violets, smoked game, charcoal, chalk dust and smoke.
