Winemaker Notes
It is ironic that one of the youngest properties in the region has one of the most prestigious lineages, but it is the case with Bodegas Aalto. A chance meeting between Mariano Garcia, former star winemaker of Vega Sicilia, and Javier Zaccagnini, former President of the governing body of the Ribera del Duero AOC, gave birth to this quality-oriented estate which produced its first vintage in 1999, a year after its creation.
100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) from 40-100 year old vines.
Professional Ratings
-
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2003 Aalto is a purple-colored wine offering a stylish nose of smoke, toast, graphite, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, ripe, but slightly compact and the finish is firm.
-
Wine & Spirits
This is all about texture, with velvety flavors of blackberry, fig and chocolate floating on fleshy tannins. Decant this for barbecued ribs.
-
Wine Spectator
Ripe fruit flavors of black cherry and fig are sweetened by vanilla oak in this plush, jammy red. The tannins are big, ripe and well-integrated.
