Winemaker Notes

Deep flavors of rhubarb and cola, over undertones of juicy plum and plush raspberry, characterize the earth-driven profile of the 2019 Bob's Ranch. Whole cluster fermentation enhances the savory character of the wine and bolsters the finely structured tannins. The fruit is elegantly balanced with the oak; the finish tapering to delicately spiced notes of nutmeg, clove, and star anise.

Professional Ratings

Rich and well-spiced, with concentrated cardamom notes to the ripe dark cherry and plum tart flavors that are long and plush. Plenty of pastry accents midpalate lead to caressing tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2026.

Lastly, the 2019 Pinot Noir Bob's Ranch comes from a site not far from the Petaluma Gap and more shallow soils. It sports a ruby/plum color as well as spicy notes of black cherries, orange blossom, and violets. Nicely textured and medium-bodied, it's another impressive, impeccably made Pinot Noir from this estate well worth seeking out.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.

Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
