Winemaker Notes

#60 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2024

Straw yellow color with golden hints. The palate is rich and velvety with a good dose of freshness and sapidity to balance the great softness. Dry finish, persistent and intensely fruity. The nose it shows intense and persistent perfumes of wild flowers and aromas of yellow pulp fruit such as peach, apricot and golden apple.

This Verdicchio is a flower shop in a bottle with elegant aromas of mixed flowers, green herbs, lemon oil and white gravel. A wine that is as much of a feeling as it is tasty, with an amazing texture that hugs the palate with a pleasant pithy bitterness and sea-salty finish.

Originally a single-vineyard wine, Casal di Serra is now a selection of the Montecarotto vineyard along with three other sites. Vinified and matured sur-lie in stainless steel, it's saline, floral and fresh with some lovely melon and soft stone fruit scents. There's some leesy creaminess in the mouth, accompanied by vibrant yellow fruits, crunchy apple and zesty acidity.

Inviting aromas of apple, citrus fruit and floral highlights follow through to a medium-bodied palate with a lightly chalky edge to the texture and plenty of clean, fruity flavor. From organically grown grapes. Nicely balanced and delicious.

Citrusy acidity and a minerally underpinning drive the range of pear, nectarine, creamed almond, white blossom and pink grapefruit zest flavors on display in this lithe, lively white. Salty finish.

One of central Italy’s classic white grapes, Verdicchio thrives in two distinct zones of the Marche. The best vineyards of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi adorn hillsides a mere 20 miles from the Adriatic Sea. The vineyards of the smaller, more inland Verdicchio di Matelica, are at higher elevation. Somm Secret—Recent genetic discoveries have proven that the Verdicchio grape is identical to Trebbiano di Soave, Trebbiano di Lugana and Trebbiano Veltenesi.

Stretching along Italy’s eastern coast with neighbors, Umbria to its west and Abruzzo to its south, Marche is a region with a varying climate from north to south. Its coastal plains roll into hills that become the Apennine Mountains, which run the length of the country. The Marche's best red wines come from the grapes, Montepulciano and Sangiovese; the local Verdicchio makes refreshing, crisp and light whites.
