The 2018 Verdicchio dei Castello di Jesi Riserva Misco holds its power in reserve, showing a delicate yet layered and sweetly scented bouquet that blends white smoke with pretty florals, chamomile, cardamom and melon. Its weighty, almost-oily textures find balance through a core of bright acidity, as lemon rind combines with green apple and hints of ginger to form a fully satiating and spicy experience. For all of the depth and character that the Riserva is showing today, the best is still yet to come,. It tapers off long and tense, while still keeping the mouth watering for more, along with that textbook almondy bitterness that goes on and on. Brava.

Rich notes of baked apricot and toasted almond are enlivened by bright, lemony acidity, with hints of pink grapefruit zest and grated ginger to create a fine, focused interplay on the creamy palate of this vivid white. Milled white pepper, dried herbs and stony mineral notes linger on the mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2029. 500 cases made, 100 cases imported.

One of central Italy’s classic white grapes, Verdicchio thrives in two distinct zones of the Marche. The best vineyards of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi adorn hillsides a mere 20 miles from the Adriatic Sea. The vineyards of the smaller, more inland Verdicchio di Matelica, are at higher elevation. Somm Secret—Recent genetic discoveries have proven that the Verdicchio grape is identical to Trebbiano di Soave, Trebbiano di Lugana and Trebbiano Veltenesi.

Stretching along Italy’s eastern coast with neighbors, Umbria to its west and Abruzzo to its south, Marche is a region with a varying climate from north to south. Its coastal plains roll into hills that become the Apennine Mountains, which run the length of the country. The Marche's best red wines come from the grapes, Montepulciano and Sangiovese; the local Verdicchio makes refreshing, crisp and light whites.
