Winemaker Notes

#80 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2013

Mongrana is the quintessential expression of the colors, sights and sounds of the Maremma region:fruity and intense, fresh and embracing, the wine takes its name – and its character – from that of the noble family of knights depicted by the Italian Renaissance poet Ludovico Ariosto in his epic masterpiece Orlando Furioso ("Mad Orlando"). Mongrana is produced without using any animal products or byproducts. It is therefore suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

This ripe red boasts flavors of cherry, cedar and herb matched to a medium-bodied frame. The acidity and tannins are in the correct proportions, offering a lingering finish. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Querciabella, , Italy
Querciabella
Querciabella was founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni, an avid collector of French wines and the owner of the largest collection of Louis Roederer Cristal throughout Italy. The property is now managed and owned by Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni who carries with him the fundamental philosophy of Querciabella. Cossia Castiglioni remarks “Querciabella is dedicated to producing among the finest Italian wines - as a winemaker and an avid collector, I believe that quality begins in the vineyard and with minimal intervention one can produce a wine that is truly a reflection of its terroir”. Querciabella wines are all estate bottled and made from selected grapes from the Southeast and Southwest facing vineyards located high on the hilltop of Ruffoli in Greve in Chianti.

Napa Valley

Cabernet Sauvignon

The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without thinking of the other. Although Cabernet has many important outposts throughout the wine world, nowhere else has it achieved such success (and, at the highest end, commanded such lofty prices) than in Napa. Here, it is responsible for bold, opulent, and dark-fruited wines with grippy tannins and a healthy dose of alcohol. The best examples can age for decades. Each of Napa’s smaller sub-AVAs imparts a different character to Cabernet, such as Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
