Winemaker Notes

The dry, cool to mild climate of the Great Southern region is well suited to the production of a spicy Shiraz of great depth of flavor and structure. Through careful viticulture and winemaking and moderate use of French oak, Plantagenet endeavor to produce a wine that will express its sense of place and deliver harmonious and compelling flavors.

The color is a deep garnet, suggestive of a dense and concentrated wine. Aromas of red cherries and blueberries are vibrantly expressed on the nose, with fragrant violet perfume and pepper spices contibuting interest. The palate is generous, with abundant red and black berry fruit, fine grained tannins and a silky, sedutive texture that is above all else, beautifully balanced.

"Full ruby. Rich cherry preserve and cassis aromas are complicated by cracked pepper, anise and smoky minerals. Fleshy and weighty, offering juicy dark berry liqueur flavors and a late note of candied licorice. Supple tannins add shape but allow the ripe fruit to come through. Finishes smooth and long. This is very easy to drink now."

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
