Winemaker Notes

The 2021 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red captures the essence of this stellar low-yielding vintage: powerful yet refined, intense yet luscious. Aromas of lingonberry and boysenberry interplay with flickerings of green peppercorn, saddle leather, and forest floor, culminating in a beautifully lifted bouquet. The tightly wound palate frames a core of intense plum and cassis layered with licorice spice. Polished tannins give way to a mid-palate rich with macerated blackberry and freshly grated nutmeg. This articulate, broad-shouldered blend is poised to evolve gracefully over the next two decades.

Blend: 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 1.5% Petit Verdot, 1.5% Malbec

This gentle giant is the original Pahlmeyer red, first made in 1986. It’s always cabernet sauvignon dominant, and this year is 89%, plus 9% merlot and dashes of malbec and petit verdot. Lush with fruit and subtle spices, packed with blackcurrant, spearmint, cocoa and graphite flavors that swell on the palate and linger on the finish. So layered, intricate, supple and well structured for long aging.

The 2021 Proprietary Red blends estate fruit from Stagecoach (37%) and the Pahlmeyer Estate Vineyard (24%) with purchased elements from Upper Range (34%) and Vangone (5%). The varietal composition is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 2% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Aging 18 months in 94% new French oak, it will be bottled unfined and unfiltered. Right now, it offers compelling fruit-driven aromas of ripe cherries, cassis, and blueberries—the oak is well concealed. Full-bodied and rich, this is dense and velvety on the palate, with a long, mouthwatering finish, despite an ample amount of dusty tannins.

A hyperripe, polished style, offering creamy flavors of plum, boysenberry and blackberry puree laced with melted licorice and mocha notes. Cruises through steadily but is a touch shy on energy, giving this a frankly hefty feel. For fans of the maximum-impact style. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Best from 2025 through 2036. 2,605 cases made.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
