Winemaker Notes

Deep garnet red. Bright, juicy aromatics of ripe cherries, wild strawberries, and raspberries

blend with notes of licorice and balsamic. Nice minerality and youthful tannins blend with the cherry and berry notes. Overall there is a bright, clean acidity and a generous tangy finish.

Pair with red and white meats, especially roasted pork, medium-weight dishes, stuffed pasta and mild cheeses.

Professional Ratings

  • 92 Vinous
Tasted alongside the 2019, the 2020 Mimmo is a bit more generous and easier to appreciate in its youth. Succulent dark red cherry, sage, menthol, licorice and herbs are nicely amplified in a wine that marries fruit intensity with structure.
  • 91 Decanter
2020 was ‘a really colourful vintage with lots of energy,’ according to Swiss proprietor Christoph Künzli. A blend of 80% Nebbiolo with 15% Croatina and 5% Vespolina aged for two years in big barrels, it's tangy and energetic. Slightly sour-edged strawberry and raspberry mingle with wafting herbs; sapid and lifted with beautiful acidity which extends the finish.

Attracting the most glory, prestige and fame to the Piedmont region, Nebbiolo in all of its expressions—Barolo, Barbaresco, Roero, Ghemme and Gattinara—creates a complex wine, truly unique for its delicate qualities combined with strength and a great potential to improve over time.

But Nebbiolo isn’t all there is to red wine from Piedmont! Barbera is the most planted variety and historically most popular as a dependable, food-friendly, everyday wine.

Beyond these two, a surprising number of red varieties call Piedmont their home. Worth a try include Dolcetto for its bold concentration and aromas of spice cake. Other grapes to investigate include Freisa, Croatina, Brachetto, Grignolino and Pelaverga.
