Winemaker Notes

Purple is their favorite color. You know you’re drinking the good stuff when your teeth develop that unmistaken hue. Don’t worry,

Chad’s father Dr. Dan Johnson D.D.S. says, “life is too short to stain your teeth on bad wine.” The Stained Tooth Syrah is 100% Syrah and is sourced from some of Washington State’s top vineyards including their Stoney Vine Estate Vineyard on The Rocks and Stone Tree Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope. The bouquet floats out of the glass and draws you into all the extraordinary fruit while the ripe tannins provide a silky finish.

The aromas draw you into the glass, with notes of raspberry, tar, plum, orange rind, herb and spice. The flavors are lighter in style through the middle, surrounded by firmly wound tannins that soften over time. A lingering finish caps it off. Give it some time to open up and it delivers.

Also 100% Syrah, the 2016 Syrah Stained Tooth has a more classic style in its ripe blackberry fruits, peppery herbs, and spice-laced aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, straight and focused on the palate, with terrific purity and solid balance, it's a rock-solid value to drink over the coming 5-7 years.

Dusted Valley, Washington
Dusted Valley A Dream Turned Reality Winery Image

Located in the epicenter of Washington State's premiere Wine Country, DVV calls the Walla Walla Valley home. This rolling valley, backdropped by the Blue Mountains, has historically been landscaped by golden wheat fields, green vegetable fields (the Walla Walla Sweet Onion our favorite) and fruit orchards. However, this oasis has quickly become home to world class vineyards and wines.

DVV is committed to sharing the love of our favorite beverage with all of you enjoying what life has to offer. Although, we will never be able to turn water into wine, we have hunted for the best fruit and with the least amount of intervention DVV will wave a magic wand and turn the grapes into distinct and memorable wines. That's our plan and we're stickin' to it!

A large and geographically diverse AVA capable of producing a wide variety of wine styles, the Columbia Valley AVA is home to 99% of Washington state’s total vineyard area. A small section of the AVA even extends into northern Oregon!

Because of its size, it is necessarily divided into several distinctive sub-AVAs, including Walla Walla Valley and Yakima Valley—which are both further split into smaller, noteworthy appellations. A region this size will of course have varied microclimates, but on the whole it experiences extreme winters and long, hot, dry summers. Frost is a common risk during winter and spring. The towering Cascade mountain range creates a rain shadow, keeping the valley relatively rain-free throughout the entire year, necessitating irrigation from the Columbia River. The lack of humidity combined with sandy soils allows for vines to be grown on their own rootstock, as phylloxera is not a serious concern.

Red wines make up the majority of production in the Columbia Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant variety here, where it produces wines with a pleasant balance of dark fruit and herbs. Wines made from Merlot are typically supple, with sweet red fruit and sometimes a hint of chocolate or mint. Syrah tends to be savory and Old-World-leaning, with a wide range of possible fruit flavors and plenty of spice. The most planted white varieties are Chardonnay and Riesling. These range in style from citrus and green apple dominant in cooler sites, to riper, fleshier wines with stone fruit flavors coming from the warmer vineyards.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
