Winemaker's Notes

Aged 2 years in new 500 liter tonneaux of French oak and in bottle for at least another 2 years.

Critical Acclaim

"Aromas of beautiful ripe plums and berries on the nose follow through to a full body, with chewy tannins and a long velvety textured finish. The new wood, cedar, chocolate and fresh mushroom character dominates now. Big and juicy. Best after 2014."
95 Points

"Here's a modern, plush and extracted expression of Sangiovese Grosso that has been enhanced by elegant oak aging. Still young, it exhibits notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, smoke and resin along with a solid base of cassis and dried berry fruit. The texture here is polished and smooth with zesty spice on the close."
94 Points

"Bright, deep red. Aromas of black raspberry and sexy oak are a bit less forthcoming than those of the classico. Thick and sweet but with great energy in the mouth, although quite closed in on itself today. Today this very dense, tightly coiled wine shows less minerality but more chocolatey oak than the regular cuvee and would appear to need longer in bottle to come into harmony. Late notes of coffee and mocha.

Learn About Poggio Antico

Paola Gloder has one of Montalcino's most elevated estates, with vineyards averaging 1476 feet above sea level, southwest of the famed medieval citadel. Both the unique location and altitude privilege the wines of Poggio Antico. The lower hillside terroir south of Montalcino is conducive to powerful and opulent Brunellos. This, combined with the estate's vineyard elevations --...

Learn About Sangiovese

Sangiovese (SAHN-gee-oh-VAY-zee) Blood of Jove (literally translated) The principal grape of Chianti - in fact, the principle grape of all of Tuscany - has had its ups and downs. For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
