Winemaker Notes

Housed within this deep garnet hued wine, lifted aromas of sweet bing and black cherries, plums and creamy melted chocolate immediately emerge from the glass. On the palate, these aromas meld to present a gorgeous mouth feel of ripe plums, decadent chocolate covered cherries, tar and graphite. A warm and moderate growing season allowed for the perfect balance between ripe supple tannins and a vibrant acid structure with a clean minerality even further enhancing that balance. Expect a long, silky finish and excellent aging potential.

Blend: 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot 4% Malbec, 3% Petite Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A large production (about 5,500 cases) of Cabernet Sauvignon from purchased fruit, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Cru is meant to be drunk by eager consumers unable to defer gratification, as well as any restaurant looking for a realistically priced and delicious, dense Napa Cabernet. The 2013, which is no surprise, is basically two-thirds from St. Helena-area vineyards, and is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. It has terrific aromatics of spring flowers, licorice, tobacco leaf, charcoal and a touch of graphite. The superb aromatics lead to a seductive, juicy, soft, round opulent style of wine, with medium to full body, an opaque purple color, and gorgeous ripeness and richness. A major sleeper of the vintage, you can get this for the full retail price of about $60 per bottle, probably double that in any restaurants.

Vineyard 29 Winery Image
In 1989, Teresa Norton and Tom Paine came to Napa Valley to retire – a dream that was quickly replaced by another when they learned their estate was prime cabernet sauvignon territory. In a matter of weeks, they were putting in a 3-acre vineyard under the watchful eye of lauded vineyard manager David Abreu and, within a year, planting cuttings from neighbors, Grace Family Vineyards. The first release in 1992 was warmly received by press and public alike.

The turn of the century ushered in the next phase of Vineyard 29. Along with the Vineyard 29 property, Chuck and Anne acquired the historic Aida vineyard in 2000 as a perfect complement to the Vineyard 29 site for expansion of the winery’s portfolio. With a new, state-of-the-art winemaking facility, and the unquestionable skill of winemaker Philippe Melka, all the pieces were in place for Chuck and Anne to lead Vineyard 29 to a new and exciting level of winemaking.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wines. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
